Weighted voting – where some voters’ votes count more than other voters

Some organizations allocate a different number of votes to different voters.  For example, a homeowners’ association may allocate votes based on the appraised value of each home in the neighborhood.

Platinum subscriptions in BallotBox support weighted voting.  To use it, go to a poll’s Voters tab, and click on the Voter Settings button (the gear icon) in the upper right corner of the tab.  (For general information about the Voter Settings, please see this article.)

By default, the Voter Allocation will be One voter per voter:

In the box to the right of that text, fill in text that concisely describes how votes are allocated.  (In the example described above, you might put “One voter per dollar of tax-appraised value.”)  Click the Save button.

Now, when you click Add Voter, or when you import a voter list, you will be asked for the number of votes that voter will cast, in a field called Vote Allocation

(Note: a voter who is allocated more than one vote is not able to split those votes among multiple choices; that is, BallotBox does not support a voter with 10 votes casting 7 votes for candidate A, and 3 votes for candidate B.)

Tip:  As a Platinum-only feature, you can let BallotBox staff administer weighted voting for you.
